New strategic move on the planetary automotive chessboard. It was made official by the British of Jaguar Land Rover, the group controlled by the Indians of Tata, and the Americans of Nvidia, the IT giant with an 11 billion dollar turnover that started with video games and landed in mobility. The goal of the multi-year agreement – Gaydon’s managers were keen to point out that Nvidia is not a supplier, but a partner – is to develop AI-based autonomous driving and related services for all future vehicles. The technological platform will be Nvidia Drive, a digital environment capable of ensuring numerous functions for active safety, automated driving, assistance and parking systems, moreover up to level 3 (the maximum currently authorized). Customers will benefit from innovations, including Over-The-Air upgrades, i.e. wirelessly without the need to go through a dealer, starting in 2025.

The goal is to project Jaguar Land Rover into the future of driverless mobility, but also to guarantee profits by offering new services linked to the so-called “customer experience” in the luxury segment. The agreement will allow both companies to contain development costs: both companies already have other cooperations. Jaguar Land Rover has an electric vehicle deal with BMW, while Nvidia works with manufacturers such as Porsche and the Volkswagen group, Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota and Nio, to name a few. In the past he had also collaborated with Tesla. JLR has not ruled out further agreements with other companies in view of its repositioning with the ambition of becoming a “truly global digital powerhouse”. In reality, it also aims to eliminate CO2 emissions by 2039 for products (already by the end of the decade the entire Jaguar and Land Rover range will be listed in an all-electric version), operations and its supply chain.

“The new generation cars will transform the automotive into one of the largest and most advanced technological industries – assured Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia – Software-defined programmable car fleets will offer new features and services for the life of vehicles”.

“Collaboration and knowledge sharing with industry leader Nvidia is essential for realizing our Reimagine strategy, setting new benchmarks in terms of quality, technology and sustainability,” added the British group’s number one, the former Frenchman. head of Renault Thierry Bollorè.

Within the Nvidia Drive architecture, both the Drive Orin, the brain of the vehicle’s artificial intelligence capable of processing trillions of operations per second that manages the Jaguar Land Rover operating system, and the Drive Hyperion (12 external and 3 internal cameras, 9 radars, 12 ultrasonic, a front lidar informs the site of the Californian company), which represents the central nervous system. The British manufacturer is back from a complicated but positive 2021 with volumes up 1.2%. The shortage of semiconductors penalized Jaguar (86,270 vehicles marketed, -16%), while Land Rover gained 3.4% (334,586).
