Ferrari SF90 Spider, the proof – A super Rossa with a thousand horsepower, bad only when needed

Cars News

“Ferrari must always look forward, be innovative; it cannot afford to repeat itself ”: observing the shapes of the new SF90 Spider, the words of Flavio Manzoni, head of the Maranello Style Center, the father of design of all the Reds in recent years, come to mind. Even if, for once, the car’s technological load almost manages to amaze more than its forms. Yes, because this 1,000 bhp “rechargeable car” represents a bridge towards the future of Ferrari, be it hybrid – which would presuppose the survival of the legendary Emilian thermal engines – or 100% electric: “This is up to the institutions to establish, but we must be ready for any eventuality ”, say the marketing men, aware that attention to environmental issues cannot be neglected.

“Our customers are also becoming more sensitive to the climate issue: proof of this is that many Ferrari drivers were enthusiastic about the possibility of traveling for 25 kilometers in 100% electric mode” (up to a speed of 135 km / h): a feature that it allows them to be more “discreet” in certain situations and that makes environmentalists smile.

“Using a 7.9 kWh battery to power the 220 HP electric engines – one at the rear, located between the internal combustion engine and the gearbox, and two on the front axle – was a choice conditioned by the level of power we wanted to achieve. and make it practically constant in use in hybrid mode. The fact that the car could travel with zero emissions for several kilometers was a plus, but not a priority. Yet, we only later realized how much this feature has thrilled the press and customers ”. A Red that manages to “make noise” without emitting a single decibel from the exhaust. Another sign that the world, even that of supercars, is changing its paradigm.

The sensations, if possible, are even more amplified when traveling in the open air, with the rigid roof with electric movement that disappears in a compartment of the car body in 14 seconds: at that point the electron guide gives completely unprecedented emotions even to those who loves the rumble that the connecting rods and pistons produce. The absorption of the roughness returned by the electronically controlled suspension and the smoothness of driving when going for a walk are like Gran Turismo. The eye-catcher in the passenger compartment does not disappoint: a mix of leather and touch controls, on which the generous multifunction digital dashboard with 16 ”curved display stands out. The manettino for adjusting the driving modes, however, is “physical”, as per tradition.

And when you decide to get serious, the 4-liter, 780hp twin-turbo V8 comes to life, installed centrally and connected to the rear wheels. And the car becomes a “meek fury”: the thrust generated by the electrical-thermal synergy crushes the lungs and forces you to reset the parameters with which you face the roads. The long straights are reset in a few moments, the same in which you touch speeds on which it is better to be silent (from 0 to 100 km / h in 2 “5, from 0 to 200 km / h in 7” and a maximum speed of 340 km / h). The eye must get used to the speed with which the SF90 Spider devours the asphalt and you must not be shy with the carbon ceramic brakes, which return deceleration and a constant performance that is almost as impressive as the powertrain.

However, the thing that most amazes us is how much the SF90 manages to make this level of performance accessible to the driver: thanks to masterfully developed electronics, which allow the car to be adapted to every driving situation and to the ability of every Ferrarista. . Between the curves it is difficult to understand whether the steering, light and very direct, or the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox is quicker. But it is immediately clear, however, how much mechanical grip the vehicle ensures and how much the front electric motor helps to get out of curves very strongly: part of the credit goes to the tires, part to the highly sophisticated aerodynamics (350 kg of aerodynamic load at a speed of 300 km / h). But there are also four-wheel drive, which help to ground (almost) each of the thousand horses.

From coupe to spider, from quiet electric from traffic jam to screaming hybrid car, from aperitif supercar to circuit curb-eater: a transformation that, by heart, has no equal in the automotive Olympus. All packaged in a hypercar suit that brings Ferrari’s cherished stylistic features into tomorrow. Of course the price is “a lot”: 473 thousand euros, double that of an F8 Tributo. However, the SF90 Spider gives the “conventional” range of Maranello all the look and performance of a limited edition hypercar.
