Lexus’ new 100% electric model is called RZ450e and is a 480cm long crossover with a generous 285cm wheelbase. The muscular and sharp bodywork hides Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, engineered to have the batteries installed on the floor of the car: thus the center of gravity is kept low, to the benefit of driveability.
A salient feature of the cockpit is the “One Motion Grip”, an optional steering wheel that recalls the stick of an airplane: in addition to having a very particular shape, it allows you to never take your hands off the handle. In fact, the steering comes from one limit switch to the other with a rotation of only 150 degrees, which allows you to never cross your arms during driving situations. The minimalist interior features a 14-inch display, located in the center of the dashboard (and which acts as a counterpoint to the digital dashboard), on which the multimedia system is installed, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional panoramic roof can also be darkened automatically according to the wishes of the passengers.

The four-wheel drive mechanics provides two electric motors to power as many “e-Axles”: the front one generates 204 HP, while the rear 109, for a total power of 313 HP, with a drive torque of 435 Nm. it sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.6 seconds and reaches a self-limited top speed of 160 km / h. Numbers managed by the “Direct4” system, which redirects the torque between the four wheels, distributing it continuously between the two axles in a few milliseconds. Powering the electron mechanics is a lithium battery with a total capacity of 71.4 kW, capable of ensuring 400 km of approved range. By recharging the car in direct current at 150 kW, it goes from 10 to 80% of the charge in about half an hour.

Among the features, the RZ450e includes radiant heaters, i.e. panels with an adjustable temperature and low energy consumption surface, positioned at the height of the knees of those sitting in front. There is no shortage of all the latest innovations in terms of driving assistance, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection as well as monitoring the blind spot of the side mirrors. Finally, the car has a device that prevents the door from being opened if vehicles or cyclists approaching from the rear are detected. Prices and availability for the Italian market remain to be defined.
