Maserati in Formula E with the Monegasques of Rokit Venturi, the most Italian team on the circuit

Cars News

The first Italian manufacturer in Formula E together with the most Italian team on the circuit. On the eve of the fourth seasonal ePrix Maserati and Rokit Venturi made official at the Chalet del Lago, in the Eur district of Rome where tomorrow and Sunday the fourth and fifth ePrix of this season will be held, the cooperation in view of the ninth championship but of “long term”.

The Trident brand is the first Italian brand to engage in the electric world championship and is linked to the Principality team, one of the founders of Formula E and currently leading the constructors’ classification, which has two drivers of Italian nationality – the Swiss Edoardo Mortara (current championship leader) and the Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi (former individual and marque world champion) – and has the team principal, Jerome D’Ambrosio (who married Archduchess Eleonora von Habsurg, nephew of the last emperor of ‘Austria) of clear Italian origins.

The team will be called Maserati Formula E and re-proposes Alfa Romeo’s operation in Formula 1 with the Swiss Sauber in a different series. The “dowry” of the house of the Trident is in the name and in the resources it will allocate to the competition. Visibility is only part of the return: the other is linked to the acquisition of knowledge in the field of electrification to be transferred to road cars. The involvement was born within Stellantis, a group of which DS is also a member who already has years of experience in Formula E and titles on the bulletin board. Until now, the Monegasque team used Mercedes, a manufacturer thanks to which it has grown a lot in the last two seasons (previously the powertrain was developed internally), but which leaves the circuit at the end of the championship. Thanks to a change in the regulation, Maserati has been able to be included among the manufacturers who have joined the Gen3 operation, the new generation single-seaters that will debut next season and which will be unveiled on April 28 at the Montecarlo Yacht Club on the eve of the sixth and Prix, which takes place on the same track as Formula 1. The others are DS Automobiles (which tonight in Rome should formalize their plans and probably the end of the cooperation with the Chinese of Techeetah and the start of that with the Americans of the Dragon ), Jaguar, Mahindra, Nio 333, Nissan and Porsche.

The Trident Racing Team and the Rokit Venturi are already at work to develop the new electric car. At least formally there is no exchange of information with the other team of the group, despite both drawing on shared technologies. With the arrival of Maserati and the probable entry of McLaren, who should take over the team with the Star insignia, Formula E would remain at least eleven teams (the maximum is twelve). “Returning to motorsport with Formula E was a natural choice for Maserati. We are, in fact, driven by our passion and innovation ”, summed up Davide Grasso, CEO of the Trident house.

Scott Swid, chairman of Rokit Venturi Racing, went further: “Not only are we laying solid foundations for our long-term future in Formula E, but this is the chance to experience one of the most exciting stories in international sport in which a brand prestigious returns to its roots, joining the most innovative and fastest growing formula in motorsport “. For Susie Wolff, CEO of the Principality team, the agreement with Maserati is “the best possible result for the team”. No indiscretion on the drivers, even if Di Grassi could give up competitions at the end of the championship: replacing him should not be difficult given that three quarters of the participants in the circuit have contracts expiring. Mortara, on the other hand, should stay. Much will also depend on the results this season.
