Mercedes GLC, the new all-electrified generation is at ease on and off-road

Cars News

The new GLC enters the vein of complete electrification and the philosophy of luxury of Mercedes on foot. A strategy that moves all models to the top in every sector, regardless of whether it is a revised one such as the renewed A and B class or new.

The GLC mid-size SUV adapts to this principle both with the range made up only of electrified versions, mild hybrids with 48 V technology and plug hybrids, based only on 2-litre four-cylinder turbo engines and with a redefinition of the equipment , which rests on the enrichment of equipment.

A choice which, obviously, gives rise to rising prices compared to the starting prices of the previous generation, but which eliminates essential accessories for a premium car which would in any case raise the cost but which, at the same time, are often not considered at the time of resale of the car. ‘used and, often, to be paid separately in company rentals and therefore not listed in the calculation of the residual value of the renting fees. A very popular formula in the premium sector. The GLC family offers the possibility of choosing between six trim levels and two turbodiesel engines, as many petrol engines and two hybrid powertrains on tap which, for their part, promise ranges ranging from 110 to 130 kilometers calculated in the urban cycle. The range is on sale at prices ranging from just over €61,000 to over €83,000.

Regardless of what is inside the bonnet, the second generation of the GLC which is based on the architecture of the C class and presents itself with dimensions slightly larger than those of the progenitor and features resulting from the most recent stylistic language of Mercedes and which despite the high wheels, they wink a bit like those of a station wagon, thanks to the attention paid to aerodynamics, so as not to nullify the effect of the general electrification of the engines.

In the passenger compartment, the generational change is still clearly perceptible, thanks to the atmosphere which is a synthesis of refinement and hi-tech. The furnishings develop around digitalisation, since the design takes its cue from the 11.9” vertical touch display of the Mbux system which, in fact, forms the floating central console. The dashboard develops horizontally extending towards the passengers with soft shapes and supporting the highly configurable 12.3” instrumentation display. The hi-tech control panel retires almost all physical commands, relies on touch activation (which are not all clearly identifiable on the steering wheel) and triggers extensive interaction with the car and the outside world through the latest version of the system operating Mbux.

The refined presentation also camouflages some slightly subdued plastic coating in areas that are out of sight but, overall, one gets the impression of traveling in a refined environment. A feeling that goes well with that of traveling isolated from the outside, especially on the top-of-the-range versions with sound-absorbing windows and opting for adaptive air suspension.

Entering the field of dynamism, the 220d mild hybrid with 197 HP to which electrification adds another 23 HP in some situations can also adopt rear-wheel steering and an off-road package, which also includes a transparent bonnet and underbody protection. The GLC with four-wheel steering in the city naturally extricates itself in confined spaces while on extra-urban routes it shows off remarkable agility and reassuring stability. The behavior marries well with the subdued efficiency of the engine, which supports every instigation of the accelerator and the set car configuration with timing and determination. The off-road package (costs 525 euros) may seem “too much stuff” for an SUV that very few would carry off-road, but it facilitates driveability and gives the GLC the possibility of getting out of the way very naturally in less extreme situations but out of the norm.
