Renault R5 TURBO 3E, the electric prototype loves drifting

Drifting, what a passion. At least that’s the raison d’être of the new Renault R5 TURBO 3E, an electric prototype created to pay homage to the half-century of history of the Renault 5 and its most legendary sports versions, the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2. This showcar will be presented as a world premiere. at the Chantilly Arts et Élégance 2022 elegance contest, on 25 September, to then be exhibited, starting from 17 October, at the 2022 Paris Motor Show.

“R5 TURBO 3E brings together ultra-technological design and conscious exuberance, with many references to the world of car racing and that of video games. This mix projects the showcar towards modernity and technology, on the border between real and virtual. This electric car, ideal for drifting, proves that even electric vehicles can be fun with incredible performance ”, explains in an official note Gilles Vidal, Director of Design at Renault.

4 meters long, dry, it boasts first fruits like the body made with carbon fiber. Designed to enhance performance and be squeezed on the track, this “electro-lozenge” has rear-wheel drive, ideal for drifting: the powertrain has two electric motors, which each drive a wheel on the rear axle, with 42 kWh batteries placed in the center, under the floor.

The mechanics of the R5 TURBO 3E, mounted on a tubular frame, protected by a flat bottom and surrounded by safety roll-bars approved by the FIA ​​(Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), boasts a total power of 280 kW (equivalent to 380 hp) and a torque of 700 Nm, immediately available. The result is lightning-fast performance: zero-hundred burned in just 3.5 seconds (3.9 seconds in Drift mode) and top speed of 200 km / h. Note the immense rear wing, ideal for increasing the vertical tail load.
