If the Italian car market continues to trudge, the two-wheeler market is booming. In fact, 2021 confirmed its positive trend with + 21.2% over 2020, despite the slight declines of the last two months, with November losing 2.4% and December 4%. Numbers that not only describe pre-pandemic registration volumes (+ 14.5% on 2019), but that bring the sector back to a market size that had not occurred since 2012. “The sector faces the challenges given by the complexity of the global context, with the difficulties of international procurement and transport.
However, what is closing is a very significant year which confirms the positive trend of a market animated by great passion and by a new demand for usable, fast and sustainable mobility ”comments the president of ANCMA Paolo Magri.
Specifically, in 2021 mopeds, scooters and motorcycles have totaled a double-digit increase with a performance of + 21.2%, equal to 289,067 vehicles, surpassing the 2012 record when 255 thousand vehicles were sold. The only negative sign comes from mopeds, which recorded a decrease of 4.7% equal to 18,835 vehicles sold, for the first time (apart from the anomalous year of 2020) under 20 thousand units. On the other hand, the growth of scooters is noteworthy, with a final balance of 151,153 units corresponding to an increase of 21.3%.
Motorcycles have done even better, with 119,079 vehicles registered and an overall growth of 26.4% over 2020. The most significant figure is however that of the comparison with 2019, the last year before the pandemic: here the market grows by 14 overall, 5%.
The electric market is also back on track after the decline in November: 835 vehicles were registered in December, with an increase of 5%. In this way, 2021 ends substantially on a par with 2020, with a total of 10,848 vehicles being registered. A very different result from that of the four wheels, which confirms that in this sector the advancement of the electric is not at all obvious. Finally, as far as motorcycles are concerned, the top ten confirms the general preference for road enduros, with models that are also very different from each other in terms of price and characteristics.
